On the brightside, I think I might've found the dumbest lifehack ever (pun intended. reference intended?). Turns out that you don't need to any fancy coding to get your text to sit at about the bottom of the textbox (see that date?). You can just have an empty "pre" tag and hit enter a bunch of times. Forget flexbox, forget margins-- I'm just gonna start positioning everything in the code editor!
